Motivation is the reason a character does or says something. It’s what they want, fear, or value, and it drives the choices they make throughout the story. When you read, look for clues about what matters to the character—their goals, desires, or feelings—and that helps you understand why they act the way they do. For example, a character staying late to finish a project might be motivated by wanting to impress someone or to meet a deadline. A lie told to avoid trouble could be driven by fear of consequences or a wish to appear confident. These motivations shape events and explain dialogue and actions. The other terms describe different parts of a story: conflict is the problem the character faces, plot is the sequence of events, and the climax is the turning point. But motivation specifically explains the why behind the character’s behavior.
